Placement Description
Internship Description
The children’s ministry internship at Mt. Zion Christian Church is designed to offer college students an opportunity to work with children and families of a large, active congregation within a multi-staff setting. Because we view the intern experience as crucial to the development of servant leaders, Mt. Zion treats all interns as professionals. Staff members take our mentor and supervisor roles seriously, and interns are not assigned menial tasks. Rather, we see the children’s ministry intern as a student, an apprentice, and a staff member with specific responsibilities and training opportunities.
I. Particulars of the Internship include:
- Interns will be available to parents as a Godly resource in child rearing. This will vary from counseling to providing biblically-based resources for parents with children who have behavioral problems or just need help in “Training their children in the ways they need to go.”
- Interns will apply principles learned in the Children & Family degree program to thoroughly review the current curriculums used by the church for ages 2 through 11. The intern will present the Ministry Supervisor with suggested changes and an action plan to implement them. This includes examining the soundness of biblical instruction in any new curriculum as well as its user-friendliness for weekly volunteers in the children’s program. The action plan must include a plan for training the current children’s workers in any new curriculum.
- Interns will assist in building the children’s ministry at the new Saturday night service to mirror the quality of ministry that is being performed at the Sunday services.
- Interns will create weekly schedules for the children’s workers for each age group under their care. This may also include coordinating schedules for any special meetings with any children’s workers.
- Interns will teach weekly in children’s church with an age group agreed upon by the intern and the Ministry Supervisor.
- Interns will review, comply with, and develop a working knowledge of the Children and Youth Policy of Mt Zion Christian Church.
- Interns will attend weekly meetings with their Ministry Supervisor in order to foster the mentoring relationship. These meetings will include review of weekly preparation for Sunday services, weekly progress on new curriculum and additional reading required by the Ministry Supervisor.
- Interns will attend weekly staff and pastor meetings to develop their professional skills in managing people, giving and receive feedback in their vocation, and observe interactions with working professionals in a ministry setting.
II. Applicants must have finished their junior year of college to apply. A committee consisting of youth workers and church leaders will review all applicants. Applications, interviews, letters of recommendation, personality inventory, and career goals will all play a part in the final recommendations to the pastors and elders of Mt. Zion Christian Church.
III. The youth ministry intern position is viewed as a pre-professional opportunity for college students.
Those interested in being considered for an internship during the summer of 2012 should contact Pastor Michael Sandberg at 262-248-7097 x116.
