How do you tackle the task of leading your organization through change? This is a question that every leader, at every level of responsibility must consider IF you care about it's overall success. Scott Wilson's book: Steering Through Chaos, is an easy read that is packed full of practical experiences that he has collected in leading a church of several thousand people. I think that this book should be read like a manual on addressing critical issues that must be "checked off the list" when an individual is attempting to lead and navigate the constant change in the external and internal environments of an organization.

The most difficult part of leadership, I think, is the personal cost of pursuing the vision that is laid out for the organization. Moving from one level of development to the next frequently means a change in the personal relationships of key team members. Scott tells his own story in a transparent manner that reveals his own internal struggle and willingness to lose the admiration of his team in order to help his church move to the next level.  I wish every young leader could catch the value of this nugget of truth, it seems like the desire to retain people's favor could prevent a community-minded generation from accomplishing their goals.  Scott has a back-bone that I'd love to see transplanted into many friend's bodies...

Scott doesn't approach leadership from a clinical, sterile perspective, he has a heart. In fact I'm impressed by the sensitivity that he has for people that God has called him to lead. His actions are driven by a desire for the people of his congregation to connect with the community surrounding the church and fulfill THEIR mission. His willingness to do whatever it takes, at whatever the personal cost, is a living model for leaders to observe and consider in their own leadership. I highly reccommend this book to you. Like it or hate it-it WILL provoke you to consider the right issues in your leadership journey.
